To use Table 7.1, you look in the square corresponding to the dealer’s up card and your hard total. If it says “draw” or “stand,” things are easy. Suppose instead that you find an index number. Then you stand if your index is greater than the one in the table. But if your index is less than or the same as the one in the square, you draw.

For example, suppose the dealer shows a Ten and you have hard 13. The table says draw, no matter what your index. Now suppose you get a Three. You now have hard 16. If your index is 02 or less, draw. If it is more than 02, stand. (Warning: Minus indexes are less than plus indexes. Using < for “less than,” we have in general…< –3 < –02 < –01 < 00 < 01 < 02…and so on. So a large index with a minus is less than a small index with a minus. This may be news to readers who are not used to negative numbers.)

TABLE 7.1. Using the High-Low Index to Draw or Stand with Hard Hands.

The indexes are in per cent. Stand if your index is larger than the appropriate entry in the table. Draw if your index is less than or equal to the appropriate entry In the table. The table assumes that you have already adjusted your index to account for your hole cards and the dealer’s up card.
